			Water Utilities drill wells into large water-bearing formations, or aquifers, and then pump groundwater to the surface for use by area residents and industry. The land surrounding the well is called a wellfield, or the area from which groundwater could be pulled into the wells during pumping.

	This sign you see above is located on streets around the boundaries of the wellfields to let us know that we are entering these protection areas and that we need to be especially careful not to let potential contaminants reach the ground.
